Your latched relay device is a USB-driven latching relay switch.
You'll use Tools.Valarm.net to drive the relay input to one of the two outputs. To make it easier to test your monitoring projects, two LEDs are positioned on each side of the connector that show the currently active output.
When your relay is latched, the relay keeps its state even when the device is not powered.
Your latched relays also feature a button and an input allowing to manually switch the relay.
The relay and the connector can withstand a current of up to 8A. Note that using a relay to drive inductive loads [motors, transformers (more on transformers, not these)] may lead to accelerated aging of the relay. Some devices that you may wish to control with your latched relay module could contain large coils. Particularly in the case of electric motors and transformers.
This may cause trouble because of the auto-induction generated when current goes through a coil. A very high voltage briefly appears at the ends of a coil when when one quickly cuts the current passing through it. This high voltage can create an electric arc where the circuit was cut, in your case inside the relay soldered on the module. This electric arc can eat away the relay connections, leading to premature aging.
Therefore you're advised not to control electric motors or transformers with an electro-magnetic relay like a latched relay. It is possible to limit this phenomenon by inserting a TVS diode in parallel with the device containing the coil. These diodes are blocking below a specified voltage, and conductive above that voltage. So if you clamp one of theses diode on your inductive load, this will short voltage peaks. You'll have to choose a diode with the right clamping voltage for your application. If you wish to know more, Tyco Electronics published an application note about this here.
